To the place I belong…

The second day in WV, we decided to go fishing…a first for Amy, the kids and myself.  Looks like it was up to Matt and Joey to teach us…

IMG_0343

…the kids were so excited!

The day was quite overcast, but all the better for catching fish.

Andrew caught the first fish…it was so cool.  I think all of our screams of excitement could have scared away all the fish in the lake.  But…

IMG_0352

then Michael dipped his hook in and ANOTHER ONE!

He was not as thrilled as the others that he got a fish.

IMG_0357

The two older kids were a little discouraged but with a little patience, their fish came!!

Ryan was very happy!

IMG_0359

Madeline did a great job, but was not thrilled to see or touch it! Oh silly girls!

IMG_0361

Ryan and I were very intent on finding out what kind of fish we caught…

IMG_0360

…consensus:  blue gills.

Lily told Daddy, “no more fishing, its time for nap!”

IMG_0375

But not us, we were having a blast…

IMG_0386

When we were in the middle of fishing, a huge storm came in and abruptly ended the festivities so we continued on to the cabin…

IMG_0332IMG_0333IMG_0398

Ryan discovered “Diary of a Wimpy Kid” and finished it in a day.

IMG_0415

The little ones and the night shift disorder (ha ha) mommy were ready for a nap, while the kids and the big boys played a heated game of Monopoly.

Notice the addition to Matt’s funny face gallery.

IMG_0402

Then it happened, the storm hit a transformer, and the electricity went out.  No big deal, right?  Well, normally, yes, but this was our scheduled night to cook for all the cabins and we had lots of food cooking that was now going bad.  Oh well, as Amy always says: life happens when you plan!  Plus I loved the fact that the kids were forced to turn off the TV whether they liked it or not and play…outside!

IMG_0418

And they found a fabulous mud pit to do that in…

IMG_0432

IMG_0437

IMG_0435IMG_0444

After the massive mud bath, we cleaned the kids up and walked to Lois’s cabin for dinner…complements of Kroger rotisserie chickens, in the dark.

IMG_0422

Speaking of country roads…

IMG_0423

Lily loves walks…especially when she is held the entire time.

IMG_0430IMG_0439

Pretty wildflower on the way…

IMG_0448

The activity of the night was building a bird house that suction cups to the window and has an open back so you can see the birds.  Ryan and cousin Susan finished first with a complete and correct house.

IMG_0462IMG_0460

As we were waiting for the food, we sat and cut up with the young people ( do I sound old or what?)  Haha!

IMG_0464

IMG_0461

Oh the love birds..

IMG_0466

As the night went on, there was still no electricity, so we had something  better…dinner by flashlight held by my handsome man and brother in law.  they were so gracious and probably sore after holding those lights so everyone could serve their food and eat!  What selfless men we have.

IMG_0477

My camera flash worked very well, this picture was actually taken in the pitch black!

IMG_0478

The glow sticks served more of a purpose than they were intended…

IMG_0481IMG_0482

Surprisingly, Lily was happy in the dark.

IMG_0484

This is one of my favorites!  These two ladies wanted that dessert, didn’t you Lois and Aunt Jane?

IMG_0485

Nothing stands between a woman and her dessert ha ha!

So it was a wild,  wonderful second day in WV and we accomplished many of our goals in exposing the boys to things they hadn’t ever been exposed to before!  Coming from a land of buried electrical and cable wires, going back to the older way of life was enlightening for these children.  They had never experienced a true power outage and all went to bed early with no light!  I guess that’s how it used to be, thank you Lord for electricity and the intuitiveness of buried wires!

As much “fun” as it was, I did say a little selfish prayer that the lights would come back on soon…

Country roads….take me home: 2012 VanCamp / Gillispie Family Reunion

About a week ago, we headed home (West Virginia) to see family and take part in a fabulous, “memory lane” VanCamp/Gillispie family reunion coordinated by our cousin Lois.  As always, she did an amazing job planning, preparing, and having everything “fun” for the kids, especially since I am the youngest of the youngest on my dad’s side, i.e. lots of  “older” cousins.  Well, as you can see, all the “older” cousins have had children and gave our “younger” cousins awesome playmates to lookup to!  The kids thought the teens/young adults were fabulous!  I am sure this week of hundreds of pictures will be posted in a couple of posts!  Bear with us!

IMG_0317

The week was filled with the outdoors, fishing (first-timers), storms and power outages, lots and lots of deer, reading, playing, cooking, geocaching, family and friends visits on both Matt and my sides, hiking, smores, fireworks, playgrounds, 8hours of screaming baby in the Odyssey, visiting childhood schools and homes, Camden Park (you have to be from WV to understand), and the most fabulous reunion locale ever!  Stay tuned and enjoy our trip!

There are no pictures from the ride there…I wanted to be creative and get some pics of the welcome to WV sign on the road, but Lily had other ideas and screamed, seriously, for 8 hours straight!  Her first long trip was not a success, notice the look on Daddy’s face in the above pic…he was very relieved to be out of the scream tank!

We stayed in cabins at Beech Fork State Park in Barboursville, WV and that’s about as close to camping as we get around here!  Our cabin had “Johnny’s (my dad) kids.”  So it was our family and the Bobbits ( Amy, Joe, Mad, and Mikey.)  The boys were soooo excited!

Here is roughing it for the Ireland family…pretty nice for a little WV state park!

IMG_0340

The deer had no problem hanging out right by the cabins…this was our daily breakfast company!

IMG_0345

The kids were amazed by the mountains, we were right back at home with the view from the deck!

IMG_0334

Car weary, but ready to go!

IMG_0337

IMG_0336

So not in the mood for more pictures!  They were ready to go to Lois’s cabin and start the playing/visiting with the cousins!

IMG_0335

So the first night, we all ate at the “Hansen" cabin with yummy Santa Fe soup…oh my was it good!  We did lots of visiting although we were all tired!

Making magnet picture frames which with boys ended up holding machetes with fish on the end and crazy afros and you name whatever else!

IMG_0318

IMG_0319

Lily getting loved on…after destroying mommy’s shirt with her dinner!

IMG_0323s

And the evening ended with a the women talking and Lily learning what it means to be in our family…I think she was more than over it with all the energy it took to cry for 8 hours! It was a nice but short visit, but the next day we had BIG plans…fishing!

Lily turns 10 months…at the beginning of July!

So this month was nearly impossible to get this little one to stay still or look at me or cooperate for that matter!  Here’s one good one!

IMG_0252

IMG_0258

Then there were the DIFFICULT ones!

IMG_0251IMG_0256IMG_0259

IMG_0289IMG_0288IMG_0287

IMG_0295IMG_0270IMG_0255

Oh that silly girl!

Hopefully Miss Katie will do the year pics!

Just hanging with our crew!

Thought I’d share some candids of our days in July!  First, we had some chess matches with the boys friend, Hassane.

IMG_0242

IMG_0244

Then we had a big car shin-dig!

IMG_0247

Then Lily learned how to pull herself up…and hasn’t stopped sinceIMG_0238

IMG_0314

We also got some of our school stuff including a really cool earphone/microphone for online class connects.  Andrew thought it was the coolest thing!

IMG_0229

Ryan taking some placement tests…

IMG_0157

Ryan is already getting into school mode with his maps!

IMG_0315

School start day…August 13…ready or not!

The NOT pageant girl…

As I sit here watching, I can’t believe I’m admitting to this, “Toddlers and Tiaras,”  I thought I’d reiterate the fact that Lily will NEVER be in pageants.  Not that I don’t think that she is the most beautiful girl EVER, I just don't think that teaching a young girl that looks and shaking her bottom are things that make you a winner!  Matt and I want to teach all of our children that it’s the heart and character that God sees and that is also what they should look for in others!  I am saddened at the ideas of beauty these little girls have on this show and the conditioning their mothers put them through!  So…now and forever, the ONLY royal court Liliana Faith will be in is GODS!
IMG_0092
God’s princess!
IMG_0094
Oh no, the damsel in distress “locked” in her pack and play!
IMG_0128
Whew, saved by her knights!
IMG_0122
IMG_0125
Actually, this place isn’t so bad!
IMG_0301
God gave her outside beauty, but it’s our job to ensure she has inside beauty that only comes through the grace and love of our Savior!
